Research and experimental development (R&D) contributes to competitiveness and national security and is also a leading component of supply chains for industries at the forefront of advanced manufacturing and critical technologies. The United States had the highest gross domestic expenditures on R&D internationally in 2021, followed by China. The top five R&D-performing economies (including Japan, Germany, and South Korea) accounted for 73% of the 2021 global R&D total.
