The board of a corporation holds a legal duty of loyalty to the organization, yet competing values within and between board members often discourage loyalty reflecting corporate citizenship. Prior research and legal precedent have not examined those actions that may be enhancers and inhibitors of corporate citizenship behavior by corporate directors from a legal and leadership research perspective. To address this gap in the literature, we present a multi-level model that identifies organizational-level and group-level enhancers and inhibitors of the character strength of citizenship in corporate contexts. Practical implications for management practice are discussed in the analysis of corporate citizenship. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
