This study compares two versions of the novelty song "May Pulis sa llalim ng Tulay" ('There's a Policeman Under the Bridge") from its first version which have been sung by D'Big 3 Sullivans, a novelty song group popular from the 1970s, to its second version sung by the People's Chorale last Martial Law commemoration 2018 at Luneta Park. Both songs were approached through three parts: the music/sound, the lyrics and its meaning, and the ideologies found in the text. From here, the first song revealed that it harks back to the long tradition of resistance to corrupt authorities from the popular songs of 1970s while the second version revealed potential in arousing the listener to move and advance social transformation. The study also deals with the potential of popular music to be nationalist in the process of transmogrification and/or adaptation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
