The original Library of Alexandria is sometimes considered the first public library in the world and therefore is also called the mother of all libraries. It was destroyed in the 7th century. It was not until 1991 that the construction of the New Alexandria Library (the Bibliotheca Alexandrina) began. Th e complex was officially inaugurated in 2002. The library is home to a network of cultural and educational institutions and twelve academic research centres. It hosts a number of international institutions. Along with the main library, which holds up more than two million materials in both printed and digital forms, there are also the sixth-largest Francophone library in the world, a depository library, and a library for maps and atlases. The complex houses six specialized libraries, including the Arts and Multimedia Library, the Taha Hussein Library for the visually impaired, the Children's Library, the Young People's Library, and the Library of Rare Books and Book Collections. The Library of Alexandria is recognised as a leading institution with regard to digital projects. It includes a copy of the Internet Archive with a vast collection of digital resources published since 1996. The library also provides digital access to collections of Arabic manuscripts and other documents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
