In 2020, the Swiss Rarities Committee examined 442 reports of a total of 100 species, 342 (77 %) of which were accepted and 25 of which refer to past years. The highlights of 2020 in Switzerland were the first Oriental Turtle-Dove Streptopelia orientalis, the first Brown Shrike Lanius cristatus, the third Roseate Tern Sterna dougalli (the second since 1900), the third Blyth’s Reed Warbler Acrocephalus dumetorum, the fourth Pallas’s Leaf Warbler Phylloscopus proregulus, the 11th record of Terek Sandpiper Xenus cinereus (2 individuals, 8th record since 1900) and the 10th Audouin’s Gull Larus audouinii. The Icelandic subspecies of the Black-tailed Godwit Limosa l. islandica was recorded for the first time in 2019 and again in 2020. The first Woodchat Shrike of the subspecies Lanius senator badius has also been registered. The first wild Black Vulture Aegypius monachus (category A) and Purple Swamphen Porphyrio porphyrio originating from an introduced population (category C) were recorded. A record number of 10 Black-winged Kites Elanus caeruleus has been reported, and a new influx of Rosy Starlings Pastor roseus has occurred, with 61 sightings of 139 individuals. New breeding records of Zitting Cisticola Cisticola juncidis (5) and Moustached Warbler Acrocephalus melanopogon (1) have occurred. At the end of 2020, the Swiss list comprised 423 species in categories A, B (birds of wild origin) and C (introduced species), 416 of which have been recorded since 1900. Six species of uncertain origin remain in category D (doubtful origin). In the text, the three figures after the German and scientific names refer to the number of records/individuals in 1900–1991, 1992–2019 and in 2020, respectively. The species are listed systematically, and within species records are listed in chronological order. Detailed information is given as follows: location, date(s), number of individuals (one individual if not specified), age and sex if known, available documentation (photographs, video, audio recordings, skins) and in brackets the name(s) of the observer(s).
