As one of the most influential writers in the history of Jewish law, R. Joseph Karo's work process is especially interesting. This article uses his hermeneutic text referring to Maimonides in different books, as a tool enabling us to answer chronological questions, and understand his work process. The work Kesef Mishneh, written by R. Joseph Karo, was printed for the first time as a commentary on Maimonides' Mishneh Torah in the 1570's, and became one of the main commentators learned routinely. Much discussion about Maimonides work was also part of Karo's Beit Yosef, his great halakhic essay published about twenty years earlier, and so is the case in his corrections to his Magnum opus, printed decades later as Bedek HaBayit. The relationship between the various passages written by R. Joseph Karo on the same paragraphs of Maimonides in his different works, and the chronology of the creation of the various works that can be demonstrated by doing so, are the focus of this article.
