The article focuses on the development of strategies for monitoring children's literacy. Regardless of the approach to literacy development, teachers of young children need effective strategies to inform teaching and to monitor children's progress. What is required is not merely a new set of standardized instruments, but a coordinated system for monitoring children's literacy development. Sound early literacy assessments should include a range of assessments, from informing and reflecting classroom practice to serving program needs.
