The aim of this article is to chart the most significant overall patterns that can be detected in the VRS Reconstitution. Specifics are neglected in favor of broader trends. Thus nothing is said about individual faculty members or particular universities, even though the data set permits the recovery of information about named individuals, or about faculty teaching specified subjects, or at designated institutions.[3] German universities have not differed as much as American colleges and universities in their academic standing, partly because admission and degree requirements were nationally standardized. The relatively mild rank differences among German universities might profitably be further studied by means of the VRS Sample;[4] but they will here be ignored. With respect to the social origins of faculty, their academic ranks, and even their teaching subjects, moreover, the following pages will deal only in summative aggregates (e.g. Chemistry) and broad CATEGORIES (e.g. NATURAL SCIENCES). No attempt will be made to itemize the specific values of the major variables, and even the notes will be kept brief, since interested scholars may have recourse to the VRS Sample itself.
