Published are four new fragments which were identified in the storerooms of the National Archaeological Museum of Athens and attributed to the Erechtheion frieze. These are one fragment of a seated female figure (EAM 6984), the lower part of a standing female figure (EAM 15484), one male torso (EAM 15485) and one small head (EAM 9223). The last is of the same dimensions and style as the head of the kneeling youth in the group Aϰϱ. 1073, indicating that a second similar group existed on the frieze of the cella, to which the group Aϰϱ. 1073 is attributed. The male torso EAM 15485 is from a figure in motion with the left leg raised. It resembles closely the torso Aϰϱ. 1.197 and has the same manner. Both will have belonged to the frieze of the cella. The fact that the torso Aϰϱ. 1197 also has both legs in motion prompts the hypothesis that both torsos could be of warriors and adversaries, such as Erechtheus and Eumolpos. Already in 1890, C. Robert, interpreting the building inscription of the Erechtheion, had suggested that the two heroes were represented on the frieze. The torso EAM 15485 displays affinity with the torso Aϰϱ. 10266, which is, however, much smaller (pres. h. 14.5 cm, completed it would not exceed 35 cm). The small torso is sculpted in the round and has a mortise on the left shoulder-blade, for inserting it with a dowel into the Eleusinian stone ground. It is probably from a figure of child. Gaia will have held a child, Erichthonios, in order to hand it over to Athena, as depicted in vase-paintings on the subject of Erichthonios. In the view of most scholars, this subject was represented also on the Erechtheion frieze. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
[ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
