Currently it is estimated that there are 240 million people worldwide who are infected with chronic hepatitis B (HB). In this context medical personnel represent a vulnerable group for occupational infections. In particular, needle stick injuries represent an increased danger of infection among medical personnel. The risk of needle stick injuries is difficult to eradicate completely but it can be minimized by appropriate preventive measures, including technological solutions, organizational solutions and personal protective measures. In the case of a potential risk of infection (e. g. by needle stick injury), an effective postexposure prophylaxis with HB vaccine and HB immunoglobulin is available. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
[ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
