The Feather River Highway, one of California's great road trips, has a humble origin story: an attempt to avoid the snow. Higher-elevation routes across the Sierra Nevada were unusable for most of the winter in the early 20th century, so engineers plotted an alternative across Plumas County's Beckwourth Pass, at 5,221 feet the lowest Sierra crossing. Today, Highway 50 and Interstate 80 stay open over the mountains year-round thanks to high-powered plows, but the Feather River Highway (Highway 70) is still perfect for a leisurely 160-mile road trip that follows this powerful river through knife-sharp canyons and deep forests, with plenty of opportunities for outdoor adventures along the way.
