In his two-part movie (Che Part 1: The Argentine and Che Part 2: Guerrilla), the filmmaker Steven Soderbergh sought to portray Ernesto »Che« Guevara as a real person and thereby offer a new view of the historical figure that pop culture has turned into a contentless icon. The paper explores the extent to which the movie fulfills its self-appointed task. On the one hand, Lena Karber finds that Che presents the life of a guerilla as tedious (both for themselves and the audience) and thus does not heroize guerilla warfare. On the other hand, in focusing almost exclusively on Guevara the guerilla, the biopic uncritically takes on much of his pronounced self-staging. In addition, the movie tells the story of a tragic hero and, so, ends up reproducing the myth of Che Guevara more than exploring the thoughts and actions of this complex and contradictory personality.
