Electricity production from conventional sources (coal, gas, oil, etc.) is accompanied by large CO2 emissions that affect the environment and contribute to climate change. Electricity production from nuclear fuel has an advantage over conventional fuels due to negligible CO2 emissions throughout the production cycle. Despite the strong concerns for nuclear energy related to the safety of facilities, nuclear accidents (Chernobyl, Fukushima) as well as the pollution due to radioactive waste, the increase of the percentage of energy produced from nuclear fuels seems as a possible solution for the reduction of CO2 emissions from electricity production sector. This paper presents a brief overview of the current status of nuclear energy usage in the energy production mixture and the radioactive waste management. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
