Only Crisis Diagnosis? Protestantism and the Weimar Republic. - The Protestant diagnosis of the contemporary situation in the Weimar Republic was a diagnosis of crisis. The article explains how this Protestant discourse of crisis came about, and that it masked a claim by the church to help shape affairs, which in the course of the Weimar Republic became bound to alternative conceptions for society. In the process, and alongside Protestant traumas and a Protestant rhetoric of crisis, Protestant hopes for the future also come into view. The main primary source are texts written by the Berlin pastor and author Johann Rump, who between 1918 and 1933 evolved from being a monarchist to a National Socialist. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
