In the past 32 years, the Democrats and Republicans in the USA have not achieved unified control over the executive and legislative branches, leading to political gridlock. The upcoming midterm elections could result in the Republicans regaining the majority in the House of Representatives and preventing the Biden administration from passing important legislation packages. The political gridlock has made it difficult for the country to mitigate the effects of the severe recession in recent years and prepare for international competition. The decline of the informal Democratic coalition and the labor movement are reasons for the stalemate in US party politics. The Democrats have lost support from the white working class and instead rely on a coalition of African Americans, Latinos, Asians, and affluent employees in major urban centers. On the other hand, the Republicans have gained support from farmers, small and medium-sized businesses, and disillusioned workers. The political differences between the two parties today primarily lie in social issues such as abortion and gun regulation. The economy remains the dominant topic in US elections.
