This section presents a historical background of the Texas Folklore Society (TFS) from 1910 to 1917. Ladies of the TFS were coming to professional functions dressed in variations of Gibson Girl fashions. Gents were wearing straight-cut, single-button coats with slim-cut trousers. The TFS organized in 1909, began to grow in 1910 with the vigor of its parent founders. The most important tangible result of the society's efforts is the promotional pamphlet prepared mainly by Leonidas Payne, TFS president. It began with the title, "The Folk-Lore Society of Texas," followed by a listing of the officers and an explanation of various kinds of dues. A discussion of the main kinds of folklore to be found in Texas was followed by suggestions to workers about collecting folklore.
