The COVID-19 pandemic has elevated the importance of location-independent work, revealing considerable shortcomings especially in the educational sector. Schools and school authorities have been compelled to acknowledge their technological and administrative inadequacies as well as the lack of essential skills among educators regarding the use of digital media for educational purposes. Consequently, higher education institutions have come under scrutiny for their failure to adequately prepare students for technology-supported teaching and learning modalities. Academic research has already responded to this issue. Numerous studies have examined the ‘digital semesters’ during lockdown and have conducted surveys on digital competencies; various interdisciplinary research alliances are actively focussed on devising solutions for the teaching of digital competencies in teacher education. Notably underexplored, however, is the question of students’ own, subjective perspectives on this issue. In a qualitative study, we have evaluated how future teachers perceive the expectations directed towards them and their professional roles, and to what extent they are willing to learn and transfer knowledge to students about new digital media. The central finding is that the attitudes of these young individuals vary widely, and that their subjective concepts of digitalization affect their stance towards digital media.
