After the failure of a referendum on the construction of a new tram line, Dietikon realised that there was a rift between politics, administration, and the public. In addition, almost half the population does not hold a Swiss passport and therefore has no right to vote. As classic forms of democracy did not work, in 2018 the town commissioned the interdisciplinary office Denkstart from Basel with the aim of improving the dialogue between these three sectors. They conceived a mobile, participatory urban development office known as "Studio Dietikon." Using a series of different approaches such as discussion rounds, district picnics and workshops it became clear that open space was a particular area where action needed to be taken. Over five years Studio Dietikon implemented built projects as well as street furniture, a pavilion, planting, sport and play equipment and with the "toolbox" formulated basic guidelines for the future design of open space. Perhaps most importantly, it established a culture of discussion, in this way strengthening the local sense of community. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
[ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
