Reviews William C. Sturtevant's planned 20-volume edition "Handbook of North American Indians" (1978-), describing the contents of the 12 volumes available by 2001, which is replacing Frederick Webb Hodge's earlier 2-volume edition "Handbook of North American Indians north of Mexico" (1907, 1910), both series published by the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC. The inclusion of Mexico as part of an overlapping indigenous cultural area was motivated by the experience of Americans who lived among the relevant Native peoples. One controversial topic discussed is the terminology used to refer to Native Americans. [ABSTRACT FROM CONTRIBUTOR]
