The article presents a study on the incremental stages of the evolution of swimming in mosasaurine mosasaurs. The researchers used morphometric and osteological data gathered from several genera of mosasaurine mosasaurs and a number of sharks, bony fishes and extant and extinct reptiles. They also used the interpolation of dimensional data and visual comparison to estimate the number of missing vertebrae. They found that mosasaurine mosasaurs offer a 27-Myr-long evolutionary sequence, which documents the development from the plesiomorphic Varanus-like condition into a high-aspect-ratio hypocercal tail fin and piscine body form.
