Keio University Libraries have an ongoing pilot academic e-books project launched in 2010, aiming at assessing the viability of a new model of libraries providing the campuses with accesses to Japanese academic e-books. To this end, the libraries started demonstration experiments jointly with academic publishers and cooperative firms. This article presents my personal analysis of the findings as an interim report: it covers the significance, objectives and features of the experiments. Its focus is on three major topics: what student monitors think about digitized books from a survey result, kind of books the libraries may need to digitize, and technical challenges in digitizing Japanese books.
