Two pieces in the history of jazz exert a distinct influence on John Lewis's 'Milano'. The first was written by Dizzy Gillespie, 'Woodying You', 1944; the second is John Lewis's own 'Sketch I', 1953. The latter in particular can be considered a preliminary work for 'Milano' as we know it today. However, this does not alter the fact that Gillespie was also a genuine 'predecessor', for in 'Milano' Gillespie is never far away -- he just remains heavily concealed. From this amazing fusion of elements by these two predecessors the final version of 'Milano' finally emerged. This article describes the process of this emergence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
[ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
