A 1608 edition of the Annals of Tacitus, featuring commentaries by Justus Lipsius, as well as by 21 commentators who preceded him, serves here as the basis for a preliminary inquiry into how Tacitus’ various denominations of the people were viewed in the 16th century. This survey focuses on the passages including the terms populus, plebs, uulgus used by Tacitus: thanks to a website under construction, it was possible to choose the most significant passages to question the possible political meaning of the commentaries written during the Renaissance.
