Cataloging codes are the subject of research, and Resource Description and Access (RDA) is their object of study. During the research, it is questioned about the presence of principles and theoretical foundations of descriptive cataloging in the proposal of the RDA. The general objective of the research is to analyze the proposal of the RDA in the light of the foundations and principles of descriptive cataloging, and to achieve them, the following specific objectives are used: [1] to analyze the founding theorists of cataloging, its principles and foundations; [2] discuss the updating of cataloging codes and treaties; [3] analyze the RDA proposal, its principles and objectives in the light of the principles and foundations of descriptive cataloging. The applied research adopts a qualitative approach, making use of the bibliographic and documentary procedures to reach the exploratory objectives. Academically, it is intended to contribute to discussions about the essence of the RDA, by expanding the possibilities of studies and familiarity with the objectives, principles, functions and application of the RDA standard. The results indicate that, even at different times, different technological contexts or that some of the rules and instructions differ in the RDA standard, what is observed in the theoretical framework of such scholars is the concern with the user and the effort for the catalog not only serve as a channel of communication between the collections and the public, but also focuses on fulfilling the role of democratizing access and use of information.
