It's hardly surprising that we take the air for granted. Invisible, all-surrounding, and only really tangible when the wind is blowing, we breathe it without thinking. And yet the air is becoming a battleground for our future well-being. Air pollution afflicts our cities, with terrible effects on health. Farmland, nature reserves and many of our rivers, lakes and seas are at risk from the effects of eutrophication and acidification. And greenhouse gas emissions are driving climate change, with irreversible impacts on our environment. Europe has had a measure of success in tackling these problems. But much remains to be done. This is why the European Commission is proposing a new Clean Air Programme for Europe and stricter pollution limits for the National Emission Ceilings Directive to meet the EU targets for cleaner air in 2020 and 2030
