It is intended in this work to investigate some ways of improving the corrosion resistance of stainless steels by suitable modifications of their passive film, which protect them against anodic dissolution. From a practical viewpoint, the method of inserting noble or oxidisable elements into passive films for improving their corrosion resistance does not appear to be tractable, whereas it is beneficial for corrosion resistance when suitably designed. On the other hand, appropriate electrochemical treatments including cycling from a cathodic lower limit to an anodic upper limit, but without any insertion of exogenous elements, provide a dramatic improvement of the corrosion resistance, particularly for AISI 430Ti grade (free from MnS inclusions), perhaps by accelerating the film transformation from (Fe, Cr) hydroxides to Cr oxides, at least in the protective inner part of the film. Finally, a better understanding of the modification occurring during long-term ageing was reached. Enrichment in silicon was evidenced in some cases in passive film, opening the way to further design of beneficial treatments
