This article deals with journeys in the field of adult education, a famous historical topic so far neglected by didactics. The article first outlines the latest developments in research and gives a few concepts as well as practical examples of adult education by journeys. Next, the dimension of a subject-based concept of adult education by journey will be examined closer and will be distincted from other academic disciplines such as tourism research or a pedagogy of travelling and, especially, from commercial mass tourism. Approaching the historical and political didactics of educational journeys, as also developed by the author, the category subjectivity is briefly inspected. It is categorially important for the concept of adult education in connection with journeys. The author's concept is based upon the tradition of the humanitarian pedagogy of Erich Weniger and is oriented towards the idea of,lifelong learning'. The article implies that in dealing with historical topics - in seminaries preparing a journey or on the journey as such - participants' analysis of their own history is encouraged. The result should then be a discourse within the travelling party, the organizer included, that elucidates the individual life. Finally, a short outlook is given on possible historical projects which could be promising in the given field.
