The Jesuit missions in Japan and China during the 16th-18thcenturies triggered important intellectual encounters between East and West, culminating in disputes concerning the Christian concept of God. Japanese Buddhists and Chinese Confucianists severely criticized not only Christian theism, but (static) European metaphysics as well. The disputes revealed that between East and West there are fundamentally different patterns of thinking and modes of inquiry, which are themselves based on their respective language structures. However, closer examination of this interreligious and crosscultural encounter reveals that on certain levels fruitful possibilities of mutual understanding (even commonality) exist. Thus, studies of this early encounter would clearly be relevant to contemporary discussions between Asian and Western religious thinkers.
