This paper deals with language change phenomena in an Alemannic minority dialect in Italy (the Walser dialect of Formazza). Walser communities offer an ideal point of view from which one can investigate language change phenomena, either relating them to contact with standard Italian and Italian dialects, or to linguistic archaicism caused by isolation, or, finally, to the peculiar situation of language shift that is threatening their very existence. The first section of this paper deals with the lexicon: the population's puristic attitudes are taken into account to explain their general avertion to explicit loanwords, code-switches and transfer phenomena. Phenomena of language change, however, are considered in detail in the next section, devoted to morphosyntax. Changes such as the reduction of contexts in which the dative case should be obligatory or the grammaticalization of new verb endings are argued to be scarcely (and especially not overtly) influenced by Italian but to have developped independently in this very marginal variety of German. Hence, the relation between the majority and the minority code appears complex and dynamic in the case of this small linguistic island, and is best explained as an interplay of convergence with and refusal of the foreign element in a last effort to survive.
