Zugriff:
Inspired by some ideas of the anthropologist Jack Goody about the ambivalence and the cognitive contradictions of representations, this article considers some aspects of the problem of condemnation of spectacles in ancient Christianity. Christian authors, and particularly Augustine, find a kind of dangerous ambiguity and contradiction in contemporary spectacles, and that is one reason why they disapprove every sort of public shows, quite apart from their specific contents. Ambiguous similarity of rite and spectacle, contradictions between truth and fictio in theatrical performances, and the impossibility of a genuine human relation between the actor and the spectator, due to their asymmetrical positions, are the main points taken into account by the Fathers. Countering the moral falsity of the spectator, Augustine calls for the ethical responsibility of man in the real life.
