This paper examines the way speakers use personal names (in particular co-participants' names) in informal conversation, in order to accomplish various interactional activities that go beyond simple addressing purposes. The analysis - which will be led within the theoretical framework of conversation analysis - is based on audio and video data of a couple engaged in an everyday shopping activity. In these data, personal names are often used in assessment sequences as well as when agreeing or disagreeing is exhibited by the social actors. Moreover, it will be argued that personal names can be used as indexical items that speakers can employ to point to extralinguistic objects or to particular loci of verbal interaction. Introducing the co-participant's name in one's turn can be seen as a way of constituting a locally relevant point in the ongoing interaction. Evidence for this assumption derives also from the analysis of the video data in the last section of the article.
