JUN YAMANA deals with those memorials in Japan that are dedicated to the Second World War. First he classifies them along accepted categories which differentiate among the victims; the crucial point here is the 'separation of the death' (1). Next YAMANA describes and at length deals with the two most famous and internationally well-known war-memorials in Japan: the peace-park in Hiroshima and the Yasukuni shrine (2). They represent two forms and models of commemorating the death: either as victims or as heroes of the war. YAMANA outlines the fundamental debate on these memorials in the 1980s along with the changes in collective memory and commemoration Japan went through since then (3). Finally the pedagogies of these memorials are outlined and their specific difficulties are discussed (4). (GMK).
