The Neolithic site in the central part of the village of Bersin is located on a river terrace, on the right bank of Bersin river, a right tributary of the Struma river. The site was found in 2006, in the course of a survey. In the autumn of 2007, four trenches were excavated (Nos. 1-4) over a total area of ca. 26 sq. m. The thickness of the cultural deposits in trenches Nos. 2 and 3 ranges between 1.20 and 1.40/1.55 m. Virgin soil has not been reached in trenches Nos. 1 and 4. The cultural deposits excavated thus far (up to a depth of 1.50 m) in the latter two trenches as well as up to a depth of 0.40-0.60 m in trenches Nos. 2 and 3 contain mixed material from various periods: early and late Neolithic, early and late Bronze Age, Late Antiquity, early Middle Ages and Revival period. The next layer (depth of 0.70 to 0.95-1.00 m) in trenches Nos. 2 and 3 contains early Neolithic material. Part of a house has been excavated in trench No. 2. The excavated area of its fire installation within the trench measures 0.85 X 0.87 m. Since many of the ceramic sherds found haven't come from stratified contexts, this presentation includes only those which could be attributed to some of the Neolithic periods, mainly fine ware. White painted slipped ware predominates. Red or brown slip occurs in various shades. Dishes and bowls are the main shapes, carinated bowls being more numerous. Decoration on the outer surface below the bowls' mouth rims consist of horizontal dotted rows; parallel horizontal zig-zag lines; a horizontal line of small inverted triangles with a concave base and a zig-zag line below it; horizontal line of S-shaped elements and small inverted triangles or stylized signs, resembling a Greek sigma (Σ). A common element in the main pattern is the parallel line, in groups or in a combination with other motifs. Lines flanked by dots are common, with wavy or double-ladder variants. Bersin pottery finds its closest parallels at Vaksevo, Horizons I and II. Some of the ceramics could be attributed to the beginning of the Galabnik group. Patterns that were common in a later Neolithic phase could be seen as well. However, net and spiral patterns that were the most diagnostic decoration at Galabnik, could not be found at Bersin, neither could high conic pedestals. Some of the patterns have their parallels in Proto-Starcevo I and II (after H. Schubert). There are a relatively small number of dark painted pots. In trench No. 2, they have been found mainly in the upper deposits. Slips vary from light red to brick-red or orange. Bowls prevail among the shapes. Carinated bowls predominate among wine-red painted ware. Some black or brown painted bowls have a rounded body and a low neck. The presence of wine-red painted ware suggests that the site was occupied in the first half of dark painted pottery phase of the early Neolithic. The excavation evidence demonstrates that some of the white painted ware could possibly be related to that period. Certain single finds as brown or black painted ceramic sherds, a pot featuring horizontal lug on the widest body part, etc. also seem to demonstrate that an occupation horizon of the latter half of the same phase existed that had been disturbed by later settlements. All trenches have yielded grey-black or black burnished ceramic sherds. However, no late Neolithic layer has been registered. Dishes, bowls, closed pots, and other single shapes are represented.
