The tumulus at Prodanovtsi, near Samokov, was excavated in the summer of 2007. It is situated near the centre of the village. The tumulus, 12 m high and ca. 56 m in diameter when excavated was situated not far from the center of the village (fig. 2). Its fill consisted of layers of different color (fig. 3), and was, except for its northern part, enclosed by a stone retaining wall at its periphery (fig. 4). Several single artifacts have been discovered at different locations in the tumulus as well as two secondary burials, which had previously been published. Remains of another secondary burial have been revealed in its southeastern part. The primary burial has been excavated in the southwestern quarter of the tumulus, near its center. The funerary pyre for this cremation burial was constructed above the grave and the remains had later been collected in the grave pit (fig. 6). Three glass unguentarias (form Isings 82 Al), a glass container, a pottery vase and two strigils with a ring for strigils have been revealed among the ashes (figs. 7-9). Each of the deposited objects had a certain function in everyday life; what is most important here is their usage as grave goods. In cemeteries dating from the 1st to 4th century AD, there are many instances of ceramic and glass containers, as well as of strigils used as grave goods. Two burial practices have been discussed in the paper, the first being the practice to insert a glass container into a pottery vase. The evidence of the Prodanovtsi tumulus extends the known area of this burial practice further to the west. The second one is the practice of building a small mound of different color above the grave. Its existence suggests that the sacred space of the grave had been distinguished from the rest of the tumulus through the use of special marks. The same ritual has been observed in a number of burials from various times. The available evidence points to a male burial of a person of the indigenous ruling class dating to the first half of the second century AD. The secondary burials also date to the Roman period. The authors consider the Prodanovtsi tumulus as a part of a cemetery in the area of Serdica belonging to a villa rustica not yet found.
