The article expounds the results of an investigation dedicated to the parameters of the choice between finite verb forms and short participles in the Novgorod I chronicle (the younger recension). The article formulates a list of main functions of every type of short participle constructions (present and past tense participles in nominative and dative case constructions). The use of short participles in the chronicle is shown to be conditioned in most cases by discourse features typical of backgrounded predicative units (aspectual backgroundedness, pragmatic presupposition, stereotypical combination of situations). But there is no full correspondence between the criteria for choosing a participle construction and the criteria for the backgroundedness of the predicative unit. For some verbs participle constructions could have special functions, but the appearance of some participle constructions is found to be not motivated by any pragmatic and substantial factors at all.
