In 2008, the projects of the Pergamon Excavations concentrated on investigating the Hellenistic royal city and the surrounding area in the framework of the new research programme. In addition a number of projects were carried out concerning the study and publication of certain categories of material as well as older excavation finds. As part of the conservation activities at the Red Hall, the dome of the south round tower was roofed with lead sheeting. The investigations on the eastern slope of the acropolis hill have contributed further to the new reconstruction of the street-grid. For example, the main street running north to south has now been ascertained with certainty. On the other hand, in the north section of the eastern slope, whose topographical and climatic conditions make it unsuitable for habitation, some few roads and paths were observed, but no street-grid. However, at least one rock sanctuary was identified there, probably belonging to a whole ensemble of such structures. The excavations in the Hellenistic Building T and Building U have substantially expanded our understanding of the settlement history of the eastern slope. In the surrounding region, work once again concentrated on the poleis of Atarneus and Elaia; in addition a new project was launched focusing on the early Bronze Age settlement hill Yeni Yeldegirmentepe. This site could in future become a central reference point in the prehistoric settlement history of the area between Troy in the north and the Izmir region to the south. At Atarneus, new results were obtained in respect of the city's fortifications, the necropolises and in particular the residential housing on the south slope. At Elaia, Pergamon's principal harbour, an evidently Hellenistic street-grid was surveyed; along with the observations of the ceramic survey, this street-grid illustrates the expansion of the city under the influence of the Attalids. An emergency excavation in the north-west necropolis yielded important information regarding the burial customs and the spatial organization of the Hellenistic necropolises of Elaia.
