En 1920, un groupe de médecins Américains lancent un mouvement destiné à améliorer les programmes médicaux des hôpitaux pour Noirs, avec l'aide de trois fondations philanthropiques gérées par des Blancs qui ont tenu un rôle important dans le maintien de ces hôpitaux.
