With the paradigmatic change which began with the increasing use of electronic media, libraries are to an increasing degree losing the ability to fulfill their mission of storing and making accessible our cultural and scholarly legacy. In the future, the main focus of collections will be textual productions in every possible form, not simply the medium of book. This engenders new paths of acquisition, preservation and interaction with texts. The preconditions by which every library which has a mandate for collection and archival preservation will be able to store electronic texts and make them accessible in an appropriate manner through their catalogs are not yet given. It is absolutely imperative to establish such legal, technical and organizational prerequisites, so that libraries can continue to support and advance science and research effectively.
