Die Ausgrabungen in Boğazköy-Hattuša 2011

The excavations concentrated on areas north and south of Kesikkaya in the southern part of the Lower City. In the north, the further exposure of a Karum Period building yielded more insights into the precursors of the Hittite city. At the same time, work at Postern no. 5 showed that it was initially part of the urban system, but was obstructed in later phases. South of Kesikkaya, evidence emerged that the monumental building was integrated in the older of the two construction phases of the Postern Wall and thus was part of a remodelling of the city that had begun in ancient Hittite times. The Iron Age structures built on top of the Hittite building complete the finds and features known from this second period of flowering of the city of Boğazköy. The excavations were complemented by restoration work carried out at the Lion Gate, in the valley at the foot of Sarıkale and at the Great Temple. Parallel to the field work, the analysis of various categories of finds from earlier campaigns at Hattuša and Tarlası was continued.
