The name Pastoral Epistles for 1Tim, 2 Tim and Tit was created in the 18th century in the theological faculty of Halle/Germany. Until today there exists a dissent among the exegetes whether this term is suitable or not. At any rate supporters as well as critics presuppose a modern concept of pastoral. To get out of this unsuccessful discourse there is only one way: finding out the own view of the Pastoral Epistles with regard to this problem. And here in a comparison of these letters with the contemporary popular philosophers it can be shown that the author of the Pastoral Epistles has adopted the psychagogic method from those philosophers. At the same time he has adapted it to his theological aims with regard to his church. Therefore the conclusion is that the Pastoral Epistles are characterized by a general pastoral intention so that the name Pastoral Epistles is justified.
