Students of the Department of Information at Hamburg University of Applied Sciences researched into the study and information culture of their fellow students in design programmes. The use of ethnographic methods resulted in some surprising findings and changed the concept of library services for these soon-to-be librarians. The following sequence of steps is recommended for ethnographic research in libraries: Opening up at a maximum to the logic and work culture of prospective library users through triangulating ethnographic methods; aggregation of findings in the form of an affinity diagram; consensual validation of the target groups that emerge from the data; focusing on two to three personas that become the basis of innovation in library services.
