In order to be able to address the needs of customers, librarians deploy several methods to research what it is that their clients need. This is important to make sure to act market oriented. However, a lot of the methods used are inadequate in their findings. Trying to find approaches outside the common empirical methods may help to find tools that are able to go beyond figures, numbers and hard facts which seem to be particularly important when dealing with people. A method that is promising is the so called Thick Description, developed by the cultural anthropologist Clifford Geertz. His method resting on semiotics and hermeneutical interpretation seeks to understand meaning. It is a process of paying attention to contextual detail in observing and interpreting the observation from the actor's point of view.
