In providing access to information, libraries have concentrated on the online public access catalogue (OPAC) and therefore on the monographs and serials possessed by the library. Two new areas of information provision will be discussed in the article: (i) In addition to the OPAC providing access to the monographic collection of the library, «OPACs» of bibliographically dependent literature ― mostly periodicals ― are being developed; (ii) to gain better overviews about the overwhelming abundance of information facilites, automated reference and information systems based on expert systems or hypertext tools will be implemented in libraries. The first trend is already strong. Cataloguing cooperatives and library suppliers are offering records of the tables of contents of periodicals whiwh can be purchased by libraries for their own OPACs. The second trend, the development and implementation of automated reference and information systems, is more in its beginnings, althrough there are existing some prototypes or already used systems. The use of artificial intelligence and knowledge-based systems cause difficulties in the development of such systems but offers on the other side totally new opportunities and solutions as some examples of projects at libraries in the United States will show. An essential point for success and acceptance by the user will be the integration of electronical and traditional information sources to offer the end-user access to a broad range of information resources.
