L'A. procède à l'analyse littéraire de l'Exhortatio Virginitatis de saint Ambroise de Milan, un traité écrit au IVe siècle de notre ère en Italie et qui a pour thème principal la virginité et sa supériorité sur le mariage. L'ouvrage intéresse le chercheur dans la mesure où il veut mettre en évidence ce qui a pu impressionné saint Augustin d'Hippone sur ce thème. Or, on le sait, la rencontre entre ces deux Pères de l'Eglise est à l'origine, du moins pour saint Augustin,d'une conversion profonde dans le comportement.
