The article is concerned with the exhibition »Mies 1:1 The Golf Club Project, Krefeld 2013« the centrepiece of which was a life-size architectural model. It was based on a design by the architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe for a clubhouse at the newly founded golf club of the Lower Rhine city of Krefeld. The 1930 design was never implemented. The exhibition was initiated by Projekt MIK e. V. and curated by Christiane Lange. The architectural model was itself an exhibition consisting of only a single piece that could be viewed and walked through over a five month period. It stood as a temporary memorial on the outskirts of the city, on the summit of the same hill it had been intended for in 1930, serving as a point of reference for the architect’s extensive cooperation with the Krefeld silk industry protagonists. Between 1927 and 1937, a total of nine projects resulted from this collaboration of which the sole surviving buildings are the private villas of the textile factory owners Josef Esters and Hermann Lange, and Mies van der Rohe’s only factory building. As an architectural model it demonstrates Mies van der Rohe’s design vocabulary at the zenith of its development in Europe. The design for the Krefeld Golf Club combines his most important concepts: the skeleton construction as a condition for the dispersal of the building envelope and the open floor plan, as well as the combination of architecture with its surrounding landscape. As an objet d’architecture Mies 1:1 escapes any definitive categorisation. The Gent-based architectural practice Robbrecht en Daem architecten was entrusted with the task of implementing the 85-year-old design for the first time as a walkaround model. They used the model as a space between the physical presence of the built object and the lightness of the drawing. In the foreground was not the detailed implementation of the design, but Mies’s architectural idea. They presented his architecture in distilled form, as a structure between architecture and architectural concept.
