In I Part Three i , Lang seeks to explain self-related information accompanying indexical utterances about one's own situation (which he calls "autobiographical consciousness") and argues that this requires producer self-consciousness which is, as already argued for, best understood as a performative phenomenon (Chapters 26, 27 & 30). To give one example, Lang claims that producer self-consciousness cannot be a special sort of inner perception, which is necessarily directed at the perceiving subject, since this would already require the awareness that oneself is doing the inner perceiving in order to recognize oneself as the object of inner perception (85f.). Lang seeks to establish that producer self-consciousness is a I sui generis i phenomenon, yet many of his arguments rely on the assumption that producer self-consciousness is I primitive i .
