In Goethe's accounts of his Italian journey, there is a recurring discussion of the counting of hours in Italy, which he interprets as an expression of the local culture. Against this background, the article reconstructs the debate about time-keeping in late eighteenth-century Italy. It shows to what extent Goethe's account as well as the subsequent research on Goethe's Italian journey aim at a stylisation of Italy as a cultural Other. I argue that this form of othering does not do justice to the heterogeneity of the debate in Italy, even if a similar form of othering was already inherent in the local debate itself.
