In the new building for the Kalkbreite cooperative in Zurich consensus provides the constituent moment for the entire project—and this at the scale of an entire city block with a total floor area of 23 000 square metres. A housing and commercial development to Minergie-P energy standard on an inner city site that is assailed by noise on all sides and which incorporates a tram depot is, of itself, a demanding task. In addition the client was a young cooperative which, from the very start, included its members in the decision-making processes. The Zurich architects office of Müller Sigrist translated the wishes for community, networking and exchange by using a single large building in which a “rue intérieure" connects all areas with each other. On one's way through the building “squares" repeatedly open to the street, or to the courtyard and staircases are docked at regular intervals. The architecture develops its strength in floor plan and section. It presents the broadly based consensus of the cooperative members with a robust spatial order, a kind of interior urban planning. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
